What is The Dare Fund?
The Dare Fund is an online fundraising campaign hosted by Lesser America, an independent theater and production company based out of NYC. With help from our famous friends, we provide a low-overhead fundraising model that supports our producing endeavors as well as various charitable ventures.
What kinds of charities are involved?
We focus on mid-size organizations that benefit most from the exposure and opportunities our network provides, that also have the infrastructure in place to effectively put our (hopefully hefty) donations to good use. We work with our VIP friends to provide funds to reputable organizations doing work that we, and our participating Daredoers, feel passionately about. Our list of charities is actively growing, and we are eager to include organizations that our participants and fans support. Please feel free to offer suggestions.
How does “voting” work?
Quite simply, dollars = votes. The dare that raises the most money is performed, filmed, and shared online. You can give as much or as little as you like toward the dare you want to see our Daredoer perform.
Is "voting" required to make donations?
No. When you go to "dare" or "vote", you'll have the option of leaving the dare field blank. You still get to watch the dare and play on the site, and your money still goes to a good cause. If you would like to make a larger gift without of casting a vote, feel free. All donations are tax-deductible.
Are my votes tax-deductible?
Yes - if you’re making a gift via The Dare Fund, you will automatically receive a receipt for your gift from Lesser America. Lesser America, Inc. has submitted its application for tax-exemption under section 501(c)(3) and expects the IRS to make a determination on the application before the end of 2016. If the IRS grants Lesser America's tax-exemption, it will be retroactive to October 6, 2016, and all donations made via The Dare Fund will be considered tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. If you’d like to make a tax-deductible donation directly to Lesser America, exclusive of The Dare Fund, please email lesseramerica dot 411 at gmail dot com for instructions. If you’d like to make a donation directly to one of our featured charities, look for links to their websites on our home page and archive pages.
Where does the money go?
Each dare cycle features a different charity. Lesser America collects funds online, and then cuts a check to each of the benefiting charities as the dares are performed. We split the funds 50/50 between Lesser America and each charity. The funds distributed to Lesser America are used exclusively for charitable purposes, in support of Lesser America’s independent theater and producing endeavors.
The Dare Fund has a double payoff - our efforts benefit important charities with diverse missions, while also supporting the independent theater endeavors of Lesser America. This is our small attempt to mend a broken theater model, that currently relies largely on grants, corporate sponsorship, and the influence of an affluent few. Like many other similar organizations that take advantage of the convenience of digital funding portals, we hope to use crowdsourcing to positively affect the way the world does charity. By combining trends in popularized raw media with innovations in internet technology, we’re making altruism irresistible to a new generation of online philanthropists.
